July 2026

July was a pretty typical summer month in the garden. Things are blooming, things are growing — including weeds, like, well, weeds — and it’s been occasionally too damn hot (or smoky) to do anything outdoors.

One of our main achievements: the deck is finally done! (Again.)

It’s not taken that long to do the work. We just had to wait a couple of months for the deck boards to arrive. But they finally did, they’re in place, they look great, and it’s great to have the deck back.

Toward the end of the month we started a smaller project: extending electrical power out to the shed. There are times when it would be nice to have a light inside the shed, and as we expand our collection of battery-powered outdoor equipment it would be nice to be able to store it and recharge the batteries in the shed. Because the garage is kind of full. That involved digging a trench through the yard so we can connect to power in the basement.

Beyond that it’s just been the normal weeding and pruning. And trying not to fry. Here’s what happened in the garden.

The perennial garden is coming along nicely. I’ll continue to update that post as the season progresses. It’s nice to see a red hot poker blooming, since they never did in the original location.

We had all kinds of weather this month. And some dramatic sunrises and sunsets.

It’s been a good month for dragonflies. We’ve always had them; this year it seems like there are more of them.

We’ve also been seeing a black cat frequently. Maybe because there are two? I dubbed the first one The Void — we name the random cats that roam around — then when I saw there were two, decided the second one was A Void.

The daylilies near the gazebo put on an especially nice show this month. And Steve got a nice shot of dew on one of our gazania. Someone would probably also like to get a nice shot at one of these three bucks. We don’t usually see more than one buck at a time.

That’s it for July!
